Master's Degree of Education
A collaboration among Carroll School, Lesley University and Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (BB&N), The Angela Wilkins Program of Graduate Studies in Education is two dynamic programs each leading to a full Massachusetts initial license and a Master’s degree in Education: Moderate Disabilities - Pre-K - Grade 8 and Moderate Disabilities - Grades 5 - 12.
These intensive fourteen-month programs start in early June and end in the following summer. Graduate interns take courses at Carroll School and Lesley University and student teach in classrooms at Carroll and/or BB&N. Unlike other programs, graduate students receive nationally-accredited Orton-Gillingham training, at no additional cost.

Our Guiding Principle
We believe that teacher trainees who are immersed in the classroom under the guidance of a master teacher are better prepared to step into a classroom. Graduate students experience all hands-on aspects of everyday teaching - mentor/mentee collaboration, curriculum/lesson design, teaching principles, behavior management, classroom design, professional portfolios, parent conferences, formal and informal student assessments.
Graduate interns take courses at Carroll and Lesley, in such topics as:
- Contemporary Perspectives in Special Education
- Classroom Management & Behavior Support
- Reading & Writing for Diverse Learners
- Math, Science, Social Studies, ELA
- Assistive Technology
- Assessment in Special Education
- And more
In an effort to address the greatest need of each child, we recognize that diversity and inclusivity are essential to a child’s learning experience, as are effective teachers. The Fellowship is a 12-month intensive residency-based graduate program. It provides an opportunity for 2educators from historically marginalized communities to obtain a collaborative masters degree and licensure in Moderate Disabilities PreK-8 & 5-12 with Lesley University, including free Orton-Gillingham training and certification. In addition to fellowship monies, both fellows receive a living stipend.
How to Apply
The application process is rolling. Applications are reviewed as they are received and decisions are made on a space available basis in 3 rounds according to this schedule:
- Round one: December 15, 2023
- Round two: February 16, 2024
- Final Deadline: April 12, 2024

Once your application is completed online, our Admission Committee will review each application and notify applicants of acceptance into the program. Please note that acceptance is by rolling admissions.
As a graduate intern at Carroll, I was surrounded by the most knowledgeable teaching professionals I’ve ever worked with. Not only are they experts in the courses they teach, but the teachers also have a unique understanding about how different brains learn. I grew so much as a teacher.
